The Graduate and Professional Student Government works to serve the needs of the student body by advocating with members of administration and leadership. Those efforts are led by individuals serving in various leadership role both on the board and within the organization.
If you are passionate about advocating for issues that affect Graduate and Professional students on campus, supporting student research and scholarship, and enhancing the graduate community at Texas A&M University, then consider joining GPSG and apply today for any of the various leadership opportunities below. Individuals who apply must be available Tuesdays for the fall and spring semester between 5pm-8pm for Senate and Board meetings.
Committee Co-Chair Positions/Responsibilities:
Advocacy Committee
- Student Affairs Co-Chair
- Addresses issues concerning education, research, and financial support that affect the quality of the graduate and professional student academic experience.
- Addresses issues concerning student health, personal and family welfare, personal budget, child care, etc. that affect the quality of graduate and professional student life outside of the academic experience.
- Legislative Co-Chair
- Addresses legislation that affects graduate and professional students at the local, state, and national levels.
- Examines legislative issues, especially during years that the Legislature of the State of Texas is not in session, so that the Graduate and Professional Student Government is prepared to address issues effectively within the Legislature’s limited timetable.
- Maintains a knowledge of all Faculty Senate, University Staff Council, and Student Government Association resolutions and proceedings and sends a liaison to attend all meetings.
Scholarship Committee
- Awards and Professional Development Co-Chair
- Oversees the Graduate and Professional Student Government Travel, Book, and Awards programs, if currently being awarded, in order to positively support the graduate and professional student body and the academic mission of Texas A&M University.
- The jurisdiction of this committee includes oversight of all awards to be distributed by the Graduate and Professional Student Government, with the exception of awards given for excellence in research as part of Student Research Week.
- Works with the Vice President of Finance to ensure that funds are available for the Awards programs.
- Research and Grants Co-Chair
- Collect and curate submissions for graduate and professional student research features on the GPSG Research Spotlight and in formal publications.
- Research and develop a website dedicated to graduate and professional research and human subject recruitment for researchers at Texas A&M University.
- Address issues relevant to graduate and professional student research.
- Serve as resource for the Student Research Week Program Director and Committee.
Community Committee
- Programming & Service and Recruitment Co-Chair
- Plans events to foster community and fellowship among the graduate and professional student body.
- Coordinates all events of the Graduate and Professional Student Government related to charitable causes and service to the community.
- The jurisdiction of this committee includes all programming opportunities.
- Pursues relevant opportunities for service to University and local communities.
- Works to ensure that the Graduate and Professional Student Government is continually engaged in charitable and service-oriented works.
- Recruits graduate and professional students to attend events and become involved in the Graduate and Professional Student Government.
- Reaches out to entities that may benefit from sending Senators to Graduate and Professional Student Government meetings.
- Serves as a liaison committee between the Graduate and Professional Student Government and underrepresented departments, programs, and organizations.
- Public Health Co-Chair
- Identifies, researches, and recommends solutions for issues concerning public health that affect the well-being of graduate and professional students and the broader university community.
- Advocates for policies and initiatives aimed at promoting physical and mental health, disease prevention, and overall wellness.
- Collaborates with University Health Services, university administration, campus facilities management, and other relevant campus organizations to address public health concerns effectively.
- Develops and implements educational programs and campaigns to raise awareness about various health topics among graduate and professional students.
- Distributes resources and information to empower students to make informed decisions regarding their health and well-being.
- Organizes workshops, seminars, and informational sessions on topics such as mental health, nutrition, sexual health, substance abuse prevention, and stress management.”
Respect Committee
- Respect Chair
- Addresses issues unique to the diverse student body.
- Works closely with the University offices, such as International Student Services, Multicultural Services, the Vice President of Global Initiative, the Vice President of Community Engagement, and the other interested parties to ensure graduate and professional student interests are voiced.
- Keeps graduate and professional students apprised of relevant and pertinent information related to diversity and international student issues.
